[6 CREDITS]
Introduction
Philanthropy is essential for the vision and advancement of NonProfits. As individual, corporate, family and community foundations mushroom in a culture of altruism all over the world, it impacts on community engagement, social innovation and social capital. Leaders must harness the tools to share the vision and create values.
This course examines the core values, ethics, myths and methods of philanthropy and, inter alia fundraising, with in-depth analysis on the changing landscape, global trends and cultural differences in the traditions of East and West. We examine case studies from the international arena as well as those from Hong Kong and Asia, in the contexts of historical and social evolutions. Topics include issues and tensions around accountability and legitimacy; metrics for measuring impact; strategic philanthropy and the ethics of giving; effective philanthropy and investments with a desire for social change.
The class will be conducted in seminar and workshop mode, with active discussion and debates, hands-on presentations and group projects. There will be guest speakers from donors, community partners and NPOs, plus a field trip to complete the practical guide on protocols for solicitation and stewardship.
